2015 Diabetes Blog Week Day 1 — I Can

2015 Diabetes Blog Week

What have you or your loved one accomplished, despite having diabetes, that you weren’t sure you could?  Or what have you done that you’ve been particularly proud of?  Or what good thing has diabetes brought into your life?

First off, once diagnosed, I felt overwhelmed and wasn’t sure that I could manage it. The horror stories of diabetes complications raced through my head.  I was petrified to become one of the statistics.  Most of all, I didn’t want to end up in a home, at least not yet.  No, not me.

I came from an old country; back there sick people were viewed as somewhat inferior. Even here in the U.S. some have a similar attitude.  The mere thought of this has helped to fuel the flames.  I clearly needed a time off.

I took my time to cool down and sort things out.  Google helps. I’ve discovered that I wasn’t alone in this situation and can even communicate aka blog about it.  This made me feel proactive and doing something about my condition, not just sitting there and let it take me over.

Right now I can proudly state that I can manage my T2D. I watch my diet, I exercise when my joints don’t hurt or at least I’m staying physically active and independent. I usually check my BG levels in the morning.  I know what happens when I stray from my diet a bit.  Another night I had a teaspoon of a cherry pie.  I’m not talking about the measuring spoons; it was a household teaspoon with a heap. It tasted like heaven.  The next morning my BG is 112. Still not too bad as fasting numbers up to 120 are normal, but my usual numbers are closer to a 100, if I don’t indulge the night prior that is.

Here’s a brief summary of the good things that came with T2D:

  1. A boost to my self-confidence
  2. Communications skills by writing my blog
  3. Have learned more of HTML, particularly how to link an image; this took most of this morning. And then I found out that I still have to link to the image on the WordPress and not to the one on my computer.  If I ever do hosting, things will be different.
  4. Eating healthy food and in moderation, long overdue.
  5. My daily life is more structured, no longer I skip meals
  6. I exercise when my joints don’t hurt

Will likely discover more as I tag along.  Enough for now.

I think it is easy to feel stigma, blame or weakness when you have type 2. It sounds like you have become empowered. I wish everyone could do that. Do visit me as “Brian (BSC)” at TuDiabetes or at my new blog http://brian-the-bsc.blogspot.com/.
