Order in which food is eaten may affect postprandial blood sugar

Diabetes Self-Management reports a study done at the Cornell Medical College.  The researchers picked 11 overweight people with type 2 diabetes who were on Metformin.

On 2 separate days a week apart, the participants were given a meal of vegetables, protein, carbs, and fat (chicken breast), ciabatta bread, and orange juice.   Postprandial blood sugar and insulin levels were checked fasting in the morning prior to eating, and again at 30, 60, and 120 minutes after meal.

In the first week, the participants were told to eat carbs first, followed by everything else 15 minutes later, and in the reverse order in the following week.   The results produced lower BG and insulin levels when the carbs were eaten last, compared to when the carbs were eaten first.

The results are not yet conclusive due to the study limitations such as its small size and a relatively short follow-up period.  Future studies that involve a longer follow-up are necessary in order to determine the full impact of food order on blood sugar levels.

In my humble opinion, if the meals didn’t include bread and orange juice, the outcome would have been much different.   My last consumption of orange juice is pre-diagnosis.

Still it’s nice to know IMO.

  1. This is interesting. I lost around 50 # when I went on GF diet. I cut out bread as the GF bread was horrible.
